About Cell Biology

Cell biology is a branch of biology that focuses on studying the role and structure of cells, which are often considered the fundamental unit of life. Cell biology can be divided into many sub-topics, including the study of cell metabolism, cell communication, cell cycles, biochemistry, cell composition, and more. By studying cell biology, we’ve learned more about how cells function and how they relate to larger organisms. By knowing what cells are made of, we can better understand almost everything around us.

While there are many-celled organisms, like people, there are also single-cell organisms that play just as important of a role in life. Cell biology covers everything from the most general properties and functions of all cells to the very unique capabilities of particular, specialized cells. Within cell biology, we can study everything from abstract topics, like energy, to very tangible/real-world topics, like natural reactions.

Cell Biology in the Classroom

Cells and cell biology can be a hard thing to study, especially with the naked eye in a classroom setting. Often, studying actual cells involves the use of microscopes and other tools, which can be expensive and aren’t always available to all educators.
